In the Heat of the Night: How a 50 Years Old Film Is Still Relevant Today

Yes, I broke the spell and for a change been very lucky with the films I’ve seen in the past two weeks. Inspired by I Am Not Your Negro, I decided to delve deeper into the race politics and picked In The Heat of the Night to start with, which has sparked a completely new wave of excitement for my mission (or challenge). This year marks the 50th anniversary of In the Heat of the Night’s release and I couldn’t help but think how relevant the film is even today… which is… kinda sad. It’s been 50 years and the world doesn’t seem to have done much progress. We are still discussing racial issues. Fifty freaking years later. We are still discussing equality. Can you believe it?… Read More In the Heat of the Night: How a 50 Years Old Film Is Still Relevant Today

‘1001 Movie Challenge’ Sum-Up: Part 2

I know what you’re thinking. Trust me, I know. That I’m being careful not to challenge myself too much. Well.. it’s not that I’m being careful, but I’m not gonna lie to you either – I sucked at watching these films in the last few weeks. First of all, I spent 8 days in Spain (more on that later) where I watched no films whatsoever. But even before that, I can’t exactly be proud of myself. Frankly, I was just getting too distracted by too many things. And the fact that none of the ‘challenge’ movies I watched in the past 30 days has inspired me very much, did not help either. So, I thought, I’ll just give you a quick sum-up of what I have seen, so you know I’m not a total loser. And also so you know what films you don’t have to stress about too much if you feel like your final day is coming ;-)… Read More ‘1001 Movie Challenge’ Sum-Up: Part 2

Field of Dreams’ Reminder of Never Giving Up On Your Dreams

Never give up on your dreams. Don’t we all need to be reminded that from time to time? And that’s why a movie with a message like that can never hurt, right? Nor there will ever be enough of them, cause hell, we need to be reminded constantly! No matter how silly your dreams might seem to the people around you – or even to you sometimes – just never give up on them. They are your dreams and you dream them for a reason. It’s not a coincidence. If you can dream it, you can achieve it, as Michael Flatley (the Lord of the Dance creator) once said. So, if something feels right, even if you can’t explain why, just keep going. Cause chances are, Kevin Costner might not be coming to save you.… Read More Field of Dreams’ Reminder of Never Giving Up On Your Dreams

‘Guys and Dolls’ and The Simplicity of Love

As much as I love the old musicals, I had no idea Marlon Brando has ever been in one. Never really heard of Guys and Dolls either and if it wasn’t for the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book, I might have easily die without actually seeing it. Call me an ignorant, but the truth is, all these musicals are still pretty much unavailable here in the Czech Republic and really not part of the culture and most Czechs don’t know them (which is why La La Land was so disgracefully misunderstood and underappreciated here). What a shame it would be to miss this one though!… Read More ‘Guys and Dolls’ and The Simplicity of Love

First 2 weeks Of ‘1001 Challenge’ Sum-Up

Well hello there! It’s been more than a week since my last blog entry, it’s actually been harder than I thought to make time for writing and I really need to work on that, I know. But I have started on my mission, don’t you worry! Overall, it started all good, excited about each of the films I picked so far, until I overloaded myself a little by the end of last week with 2 way too serious topics – both based on real events. But first thing first.. … Read More First 2 weeks Of ‘1001 Challenge’ Sum-Up

The Method (aka how to watch all of the 1001 films sooner than you die)

So, goals and challenges set, now how to actually start? Hmm, that actually turned out to be a challenge in its own terms. First, I thought, being the ‘perfectly organized everything’ freak, I will simply go through the index with all the films, tick off the ones I’ve seen and then simply start with the films I already own, but didn’t get to watch yet. From there, I thought, I will take it chronologically, leaving out the films I cannot get hold of at this point. Sounds pretty easy right? Well.. if only…… Read More The Method (aka how to watch all of the 1001 films sooner than you die)

1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

Here we go! “1001 movies you must see before you die” book by Steven Jay Schneider has been delivered to my mailbox couple weeks ago when I decided I am up to the challenge! And what challenge exactly? Well, to not miss any of the must see films before I die of course.

As a bachelor in film studies, general movie fanatic and a film industry professional (I spent six years working for The Prague International Film Festival – Febiofest) I was pretty sure I’ll be able to tick off quite a few. Well, a few I did, indeed. But somehow, the number wasn’t as impressive as I’ve been hoping for. … Read More 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die
